Under the executive direction ofJeremy Sustaita, SMART Orchestra continues to expand its impact through innovative programming, educational initiatives, and community engagement. Jeremy previously served more than four years as President of the Board of Directors before assuming the role of Executive Director and remains deeply committed to the organization’s mission of fostering artistic excellence and community enrichment through music.
The organization is governed by a dedicated Board of Directors led by PresidentLindsey Combs, who is serving her second term as Board President. Together with a passionate team of volunteers and community leaders, the Board helps guide SMART Orchestra’s strategic vision and long-term growth.

The artistic vision of the organization is led by Artistic Director Dr. David Cole, whose leadership, experience, and dedication have helped elevate the orchestra’s musical excellence and community presence. Supporting this mission is Associate Artistic Director Maryssa Chartier, who directs SMART Sessions, SMART Orchestra’s chamber music and recital series, creating additional opportunities for musicians to perform, collaborate, and connect with audiences in more intimate settings.
Today, SMART Orchestra serves the community through a variety of programs and initiatives, including:
- – A free community concert series featuring full orchestral performances throughout the year.
- – SMART Sessions, our chamber music and recital series that provides additional performance opportunities for musicians and engaging musical experiences for audiences.
- – Educational outreach programs, internships, conducting opportunities, mentoring experiences, and community partnerships designed to inspire and develop the next generation of musicians.
- – Community engagement initiatives that expand access to the arts and strengthen the cultural life of San Marcos and the surrounding region.

At its heart, SMART is designed to be an outlet for individuals who are passionate about studying, performing, and sharing music. We encourage participants to contribute their time, talent, and skills in service of the orchestra’s mission and the broader community.
Whether you are attending a concert, performing on stage, volunteering behind the scenes, serving on our Board of Directors, supporting our organization as a donor, or participating in one of our educational programs, your enthusiasm and curiosity are welcome in an environment built on acceptance, collaboration, and growth.
Together, the leadership team, Board of Directors, musicians, volunteers, donors, and community partners are retaining local talent, training future musicians, expanding access to the arts, and enriching lives through the transformative power of orchestral music.
