SMART Orchestra exists to enrich our community through the transformative power of orchestral music by providing free, high-quality performances, cultivating local artistic talent, expanding educational opportunities, and making the performing arts accessible to all.
Our Vision
We envision a thriving Central Texas where orchestral music is accessible, valued, and celebrated by every generation. SMART Orchestra strives to be a regional leader in artistic excellence, musician development, community engagement, and innovative programming while inspiring a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
Under the executive direction of Jeremy Sustaita, SMART Orchestra continues to expand its impact through innovative programming, educational initiatives, and meaningful community engagement. Jeremy previously served more than four years as President of the Board of Directors before assuming the role of Executive Director and remains deeply committed to advancing the organization’s mission through strategic leadership, artistic collaboration, and community service.
The organization is governed by a dedicated Board of Directors led by President Lindsey Combs, who is serving her second term in that role. Together with an exceptional team of volunteers and community leaders, the Board provides strategic oversight while helping guide the long-term growth and sustainability of the organization.
The artistic vision of SMART Orchestra is led by Artistic Director Dr. David C. Cole, whose experience, leadership, and commitment to musical excellence have elevated both the orchestra and its role within the community. Supporting this mission is Associate Artistic Director Maryssa Chartier, who directs SMART Sessions, the organization’s chamber music and recital series, creating additional opportunities for musicians to perform, collaborate, and connect with audiences in more intimate settings.
Today, SMART Orchestra fulfills its mission through a variety of programs and initiatives, including:
• Free community concerts featuring full symphony orchestra performances throughout the season.
• SMART Sessions, our chamber music and recital series that provides additional performance opportunities for musicians while bringing high-quality live music to audiences in intimate settings.
• Educational outreach, internships, conducting opportunities, mentorship, and partnerships that help develop the next generation of musicians and arts leaders.
• Community engagement initiatives that increase access to the performing arts and strengthen the cultural life of San Marcos and the surrounding region.
At its core, SMART Orchestra exists as a home for individuals who are passionate about learning, performing, and sharing music. We believe that music has the power to educate, unite, inspire, and transform lives. Every member is encouraged to contribute their unique talents, experiences, and perspectives in support of our mission and the communities we serve.
